Housing Industry Foundation for Education (HIFE)

One of the most pressing problems facing builders in southwestern Pennsylvania, and the nation as a whole, is the growing shortage of skilled labor in the housing industry. Adequately meeting our need for skilled workers is no small task. The United States Department of Labor estimates that some 240,000 new workers must be enlisted and trained annually to meet the nation's building needs for the foreseeable future. In direct contrast to this labor shortage, the number of construction training programs offered by high schools, post-secondary vocational schools and community colleges has declined dramatically over the past two decades.

Established in 1998, Housing Industry Foundation for Education, HIFE, was created to promote and assist vocational training programs for the purpose of increasing the number of men and women working in the housing construction trades. As a 501 (C) (3) charitable education foundation, HIFE serves to introduce young men and women to career opportunities in the construction industry through on-the-job work experiences and other education opportunities. HIFE's programs serve to promote new training opportunities and enlighten parents, students and teachers on the rewarding careers available in the housing industry.

Formed by the members of the Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh (BAMP), HIFE works in cooperation with local vocational technical training schools to blend their classroom training with professional, hands-on, guidance to give students a better understanding of the technical training and skills needed to succeed in the construction industry. Foundation support provides logistical coordination, project administration and facilitates professional guidance for student working in community based construction projects. The Foundation also offers scholarship opportunities for persons seeking financial assistance in support of furthering their education in construction related fields.

During its short period of existence, HIFE has successfully reached out to over 2000 students, parents and teachers to introduce them to the exciting and challenging careers available in the home building industry. It has also been a leader in linking employers with current and future members of the homebuilding workforce.
